Centric, the African American-targeted collaborative effort between BET and MTV networks, is the new home to the Soul Train renaissance. On September 28, Centric kicked off its Soul Train programming as part of a tribute to Michael Jackson.
Several times per week, viewers can tune in to see an Afro-wearing Don Cornelius hosting 70s-era Soul Train episodes. Aretha Franklin, The O'Jays, Gladys Knight, the Chi-Lites, and many more light up the screen with their powerful performances. And of course, the Soul Train dancers showcase all that was hip and happening in dance and fashion. The broadcasts offer a sense of nostalgia for baby boomers, while younger viewers can uncover the origins of contemporary soul music.
“We are extremely proud to offer our audience a destination that strongly reflects who they are today,” stated Paxton Baker, Centric’s General Manager and Executive Vice President.
On November 29, BET and Centric aired a simulcast of the 2009 Soul Train Awards. After a two-year hiatus, the awards show was embraced by viewers and enjoyed two back-to-back airings on Centric. The legacy of Soul Train is poised to benefit greatly from the lift originally created by BET J, coupled with the strength of media powerhouse MTV.
“This couldn’t be a more perfect time to debut the Centric brand and build from BET J’s strong music foundation, bringing a fresh offering dedicated to the African-American and multi-cultural adult audience,” said Scott Mills, BET Networks President and Chief Operating Officer.
Classic episodes of Soul Train are also available on the SoulTrain.com video channel. By embracing both electronic media and cable television, the original tastemaker in black music is preparing for an epic renaissance.
