After 7 has joined the resurgence of the R&B flavor that ruled the ‘90s, as soulful crooners reemerge onto the scene. The group known for hits such as “Ready or Not,” “In the Heat of the Moment,” “Can’t Stop,” and “Baby I’m For Real/Natural High” is already etching out their comeback fresh off a performance at the 2015 Soul Train Awards.
It’s been 20 years since R&B trio Kevon Edmonds, Keith Mitchell, and Melvin Edmonds released their album Reflections, but their Soul Train Awards performance proved that, just like a fine wine, their voices have gotten even better with age.
The group reunited with Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and Daryl Simmons to record the single “I Want You,” which also features Melvin’s son Jason Edmonds. The song is a smooth mid-tempo groove that is reminiscent of their ‘90s sound, but also catapults them into the sounds of today. The jazzy song gets back to the group’s musical theme of love. “It’s about wanting and accepting every part of that special person,” said Keith.
Fans’ response to “I Want You” was so enthusiastic that the group is now back in the studio working on an album. As to what fans can expect? “Historically, Babyface and Darryl Simmons have a lock on the ability to take raw talent and guide it in the proper direction,” Kevon explained. “With their guidance, we’re taking every diamond, pearl, and precious stone that we have in terms of creativity and putting it all into this record. The moment is now.”
After 7’s new album is expected to be released in 2016.
