If you bumped into a wall or stumbled over a chair at some random club back in the 1980s, it may have been a result of taking singer Corey Hart’s lyrics a bit too seriously. In 1984 the Canadian singer hit the charts with the song “Sunglasses at Night,” the first single from his debut album First Offense. As Hart’s song started rising up the charts, he hit the road doing radio and press interviews along with touring as the opening act for artists such as Rick Springfield, Thomas Dolby and Hall & Oates. The fruits of his labor paid off as “Sunglasses” spent a little over four months in the Top 40, peaking at number seven on the pop chart. Thanks to that tune and the follow-up single “It Ain’t Enough,” First Offense was a multi-platinum smash and earned Hart a Grammy Award nomination for best new artist (which he lost to the band Culture Club, another group for whom he once opened). By the time he released his second album, however, Hart was a headlining performer, selling out arenas from Toronto to Tokyo. He had hit songs and music videos in heavy rotation on MTV. Needless to say, the guy rarely made it far from the house without being mobbed by adoring fans. His sophomore effort, Boy In The Box, contained the hit “Never Surrender,” which went to the top of the chart in Canada and number three in the U.S. The album also included the song “Eurasian Eyes,” which was also part of the soundtrack for the feature film 9 ½ Weeks starring Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke. Hart continues to record as well as write for other artists such as Celine Dion, and he remains an in demand performer worldwide.
