Profile: Collette

ColletteEvery now and then hip-hop and R&B make a great pairing. This time it’s in the form of Collette. The John Lennon songwriting contest winner recently released her second full length studio album, Juneteenth Revolution. profiles this R&B/hip-hop hybrid.

There is a long legacy of hip hop soul divas in music. Form Mary J. Blige to Lauryn Hill to Alicia Keys, the essence of both genres oozes through them. For Harlem, NY resident Collette, that essence has seemingly taken a hold of her. The South Carolina native first broke onto the scene in 2008 with the release of her debut album Experience Collette. A collection of soulful records with a hip-hop swagger gave a peek into the mind of singer/lyricist. Collette continued her path by releasing a Christmas single in 2012, “Keep Christmas Alive,” which won her the prestigious John Lennon International Songwriting Competition Award. Capitalizing on her buzz from the win, Collette followed up with her Coco By Request EP in 2011, which garnered her a nomination for Female Vocalist of the Year. In the world of indie R&B/soul Collette was on a steady incline that culminated with the release of her second full length album Juneteenth Revolution.

Juneteenth Revolution brings the nostalgic feeling of late 90s/early 2000s soul music, coupled with the energy and freshness of early 90s hip-hop. Her lyrics are honest, not oversexed, and most of all, relatable. There is a general feeling that Collette truly enjoyed making this project and it screams through her voice.

No need to put any undue pressure on Collette by comparing her to legendary artists or making promises of Grammys and American Music Awards. The truth of the matter is quality artists like Collette aren’t on the priority list of shrinking, delusional major labels. The great part is that label or no label, Collette continues to make and release great music. As long as she stays on that path, she will continue to build a wonderful legacy.
