“It’s a lovely precious dream to be young, gifted and black” were lyrics which the late, great Donny Hathaway crafted to encourage a country faced with racial equality. These lyrics still ring truth despite the advances in race relations.
The first black president, President Barack Obama, is in office, but there are still many young, gifted and black men incarcerated and falling to things like gang violence and drugs. Meshell Ndegeocello and Cody Chestnut are doing exactly what many artists are called to do … be a positive voice to and for the masses.
