In early 2011 Essence Magazine announced its plan to help craft the next star of Rhythm and Blues. Aligning themselves with 80s R&B hit maker Perri “Pebbles” Reid, Essence launched nationwide auditions in the hope of finding its first ever R&B Star. After 6 months of competing with some of the best undiscovered singers in the country, Charlotte, NC vocalist Greta Prince took the stage at the 2011 Essence Music Festival as the winner. Not long after the competition, Prince signed a management deal and a recording contract. Recently releasing her debut single, Greta Prince is on a mission to prove that she is indeed the next R&B Star.
Greta Prince got her start singing in church at the tender age of five. It was her love for music that guided her through years of talent shows and studio sessions, and eventually led her Atlanta, GA to pursue her music full time. After establishing herself as a staple on Atlanta’s indie scene, Greta learned of a once in a lifetime chance. Essence Magazine was launching a search to crown a new music star. Even more exciting was the fact that legendary hit maker Pebbles Reid was serving as the show’s host and executive producer. Known for her own solo hits as well as discovering R&B/Pop hit group TLC, Pebbles was the perfect person to carry out the task of finding urban music’s next big thing. This was an opportunity almost missed by Prince. “I kind of fell upon it by chance. Actually, my boyfriend heard about it on the radio. He heard Pebbles talking about it and told me about it.” Greta auditioned and after beating out hundreds of other singers, eventually captured the title of Essence Magazine’s R&B Star.
It’s been a year since Greta Prince performed at the Essence Music Festival. Twelve months later she stands with her head held a little higher. She is now managed by legendary music executive Kevin Liles, and a recent signee to long standing R&B label Malaco Records. Her Warryn Campbell-produced debut single “You Should Know” is currently climbing the Urban AC radio charts. For Greta Prince the future looks as bright as a star.
