In 1982 Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn teamed up to record their version of the classic ballad “If This World Were Mine,” originally recorded by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell in 1967. At the time, both Vandross and Lynn were in various early stages of their careers, but definitely not strangers to the industry or music fans. Vandross was just making a name for himself as a solo artist with the release of his debut album Never Too Much in 1981, but he was already a music industry veteran. He penned a song for the 1975 Broadway production of The Wiz, and had songwriting credits under his belt for artists such as Roberta Flack and David Bowie. In addition to his songwriting, Vandross had worked as a background vocalist for a host of artists including Diana Ross, Carly Simon, Donna Summer, Bette Midler, Chic, and Barbra Streisand. Cheryl Lynn had experienced success as a background vocalist on the song “Georgy Porgy” by Toto, as well as with her own singles “Star Love” and the number one hit “To Be Real.” When the two joined forces to record “If This World Were Mine” for Lynn’s album Instant Love, it became a classic all over again. The song was a mainstay on daytime radio rotation as well as the late night quiet storm format, and made it to number four on the R&B chart. Vandross would continue his meteoric rise to stardom, continually setting the standard for vocalists before his untimely death in 2005. Lynn continued to strike gold with songs like the top ten “Every Time I Try To Say Goodbye” and another number one hit,“Encore,” produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. She still records and performs. Her music has seen resurgence in the UK, where “To Be Real” hit the charts back in 2010.
