Winter is fast approaching, and fellas are in need of a style “touch up” after a casual and carefree summer. With the lack of media attention on Black men’s hair trends, the industry’s hottest artists serve as inspiration to everyday people looking to upgrade their look. Celebrity barbers Maurice Manley II of M Barbering (Common, Jermaine Dupree, Avant) and Rashida Carbo, aka RahCuts (Andre 3000, Bow Wow, Akon) share the most popular hairstyles and cuts guys will be sporting this fall.
The natural hair movement isn’t just for the ladies. We’ve seen ?uestlove and Wiz Khalifa rock sky high ‘fros that only require a wide-tooth comb and moisturizer for maintenance. Carbo, an international barber with a portfolio of over 300 entertainers, said Eric Benet requests the naturally curly ‘fro. Diggy Simmons can also be seen sporting the shorter version the full afro. A pick or a blow out smoothly transitions this style from the office to happy hour.
The afro can be easily modified by cutting the sides. The Mohawks, another popular and edgy look, aren’t going anywhere, anytime soon.
“A lot of people, male and female, are requesting Mohawks, similar to Usher and the lead artist of Mindless Behavior [Prodigy],” said Manley, who has over 20 years of barber experience.
“I just cut Father MC the other day and he requested a Mohawk,” Carbo adds. Expect to see musicians rock designs and even splashes of color on their shaved sides this fall.
Designs and colors aren’t limited to Mohawks. The average low cut is getting remixed as well. Chris Brown currently has blond hair and Manley said that his younger customers are getting designs like Ray J. Lloyd even tattooed designs onto the back of his head for a permanent effect. Depending on the complexity of these styles, upkeep might require a weekly visit to the barber shop.
For the guys who prefer a simple style with minimum maintenance, the Caesar has stood the test of time, literally. Both RahCuts and M Barbering get lots of request for Drake, Kanye, and Nas’s signature cut.
“Nas either wears a Caesar or a “high ‘n tight” fade, Carbo said.
Facial hair is also becoming popular as the months grow cooler. Manley said that Rick Ross-like beards are the most requested. Common, another one of Manley’s clients, wears a beard that is less full. Diddy, T.I., and 50 Cent also wear a small amount of barely-there facial hair.
Whether a guy chooses to tweak or completely remake his image, there is an endless array of options available when choosing a hairstyle for the fall. Spotting artists at celebrity events (like the Soul Train Awards red carpet), concerts, or on music videos is helpful when trying to find a style that compliments any body type or personality.
