Soul Train has probably not seen a better historian than Questlove. The musician, producer and die-hard Soul Train devotee knows our brand like the back of his hand and often participates in Soul Train-related panel discussions. Those of us who caught the VH1 documentary “The Hippest Trip In America” may remember a clip of Questlove saying he keeps his fro together because he didn’t want Frederick Douglass showing up on him.
That comment was made in reference of course to an Afro Sheen commercial that aired in the 70s during the Saturday morning broadcast. Keeping true to the Ultra Sheen style of advertising that promoted both their brand as well as black pride, we learn a bit about Frederick Douglass before he encourages his young conversation partner to groom his Afro.
If someone were to tell him that people would still enjoy watching these commercials 30 years later, I’m sure he’d say, “aint nobody gonna believe this.”
