Last season, Smirnoff and BET had a big hit with “Master of the Mix,” a reality show that allowed some of the nation’s hottest DJs to audition for “their place in music history”. Featuring the iconic Kid Capri and Grammy Award winning producer/DJ Just Blaze, the show crowned DJ Scratch the winner for 2010.
In celebration of the forthcoming season two of “Master of the Mix,” Smirnoff recently invited a crowd of media professionals and bloggers to have a DJ lesson at New York’s Scratch Academy. Co-founded by the late, great Jam Master Jay, the school gives aspiring DJs the opportunity to learn from some of the best in the biz and we had a great time being introduced to the art of scratching. Just Blaze was in the building, the drinks were flowing and a good time was had by all.
Sadly, my legendary lack of rhythm impeded my dreams of becoming the next Beverly Bond or Coco Chanelle (though I think a few more visits… okay, semesters, at the Scratch Academy could probably get me right on track), but I still loved my little peek into the world of DJing! It’s hard work and I salute “Master of the Mix” for supporting the art in its purest form, especially in the era of the celebrity DJ and the programs that can do all the work for you.
While I didn’t quite get my skills ready for the big completion, some of you real DJs out there might have what it takes to be Smirnoff’s next Master of the Mix. Currently, auditions are being held across the nation for a new crop of party rockers to step up and prove that they have what it takes to move the crowd. Winners of the local competitions will hop aboard a tour bus and travel through seven cities, being judged on technical ability, track selection, originality, and crowd response. The Master of the Mix will be awarded $250,000 in cash and prizes. This year’s judges include Kid Capri and Quincy Jones, who will be joined by a number of celebrity guests.
